Introducing Childcare Agencies

Recruiting for the domestic and child care industry has become very big business across the world. Agencies rapidly developed to cater for this market. Most agencies conventionally offer a similar service placing all or some of the below:

Daily Nanny:
  • Sole charge of small children.
  • Qualified and/or experienced.
  • Standard hours tend to be Monday to Friday 8.00/8.30am to 6.00/6.30pm.
  • Baby-sitting is extra.
  • Weekends are free, if weekend work is necessary then the nanny should be given time in lieu.
Live in Nanny:
  • Sole charge of small children.
  • Qualified and/or experienced.
  • Standard hours tend to be Monday to Friday 7.00/8.00am to 6.30/7.30pm.
  • Baby-sitting is usually 2 nights per week, arranged in advance.
  • Weekends are free, if weekend work is necessary then the nanny should be given time in lieu.
Nanny Shares:
  • Sole charge of small children from two or more families.
* Please note we do not recommend that a Nanny looks after two young babies from different families unless they have experience in this area.

Mother's / father's help:
  • Help for the parent who shares the care of the children with the Nanny, if the parent leaves the children it is usually only for short periods of time.
  • Often non-qualified, with or with out experience.
  • Standard hours tend to be Monday to Friday 8.00/8.30am to 6.00/6.30pm.
  • Baby-sitting is extra.
  • Weekends are free, if weekend work is necessary then the nanny should be given time in lieu.
Maternity Nurse:
  • Temporary placement i.e. 4-6 weeks.
  • Qualified Nursery Nurse or Nurse with experience.
  • Usually works on a 24 hour availability service 6/7 days per week.
Nanny/House keeper:
  • Combines running the house and child care, usually not in sole charge of the children on a full time basis.
  • Can be live in or live out.
  • Work flexible hours, usually no more that 8/9 hours per day.
Proxy parent:
  • In the parents absence takes 24 hour, sole charge of the children.
  • Has complete responsibility for the home.
  • Live in, temporary position.
Night Nanny:
  • Will arrive in the early evening and will care for the child/children while the parent (s) get a good nights sleep.
  • Many will help establish a good sleep routine for the children in their care.
  • Live out, temporary position.

Agencies modus operandi

Agencies will take note of employers requirements and will then submit candidates to them for approval drawn from a short list. Candidates are required to attend an interview with the agency lasting up to 1 hour where at least the following steps are taken:
  • Discuss employment history, family background, etc.
  • Establish the kind of work the candidate is looking for, full-time, part-time, etc.
  • Read and discuss any written references from previous employers.
  • Check proof of identity. Passport, driving license, etc.
  • Examine qualifications usually presented in a 'Record of Achievment' file.
  • Take careful note of referee contact telephone numbers.
  • Ask to see an enhanced CRB certificate and note the issue date.
  • Discuss salary requirements.
  • Discuss details of any jobs which might be suitable.
After the interview referees are then telephoned and the authenticity of any written references established. If the candidate meets the job criteria and the standards set by the Agency she/he may be offered to the client for interview (s):
  • Discuss the exact nature of the job, start date, hours, times, holiday arrangements, transport availability, schooling, etc.
  • Meet the children who will be in the care of the candidate.
  • Tour of premises.
  • Discuss terms and conditions, method and amount of payments.
  • Sometimes a contract is drawn up, often with advice from the Agency.
  • The candidate is often required to visit again and spend time with the children.
  • Usually initial employment is on a 1 month probationary period basis. Agency fees are not due until the end of that period.
There is a wide variation in the referral fee set by agencies, depending on the location, difficulty at the time in finding suitable candidates, and other factors such as cost of overheads, but mostly they only charge the job provider and not the job seeker. One off placement fees for a full time nanny range, on average, from £500-00 to £1200 in the UK, from $500.00 - $1500 in the USA.
Agencies will offer interview advice and fully support the family during the selection process.
